Continuing Education Required For Master Loggers

In order to maintain your Master Logger designation, the Kentucky Forest Conservation Act requires Kentucky Master Loggers to obtain six hours of Continuing Education (CE) before the expiration date listed on your Master Logger card. Master Logger designations are valid for three years from the date the card was issued. If the required six hours are not obtained prior to your expiration date, then your designation will be revoked and your name will be removed from the active Master Logger list. At that point, the only way to regain your Master Logger status is by re-attending a 3-Day Master Logger Class.  Pay close attention to your expiration date and schedule to attend a CE Class before that date in order to renew your designation for another three-year period.

How to Obtain Continuing Education Credits

You can attend a pre-approved continuing education course. These courses vary from a one-day six-credit-hour program to programs that may offer credits from one to four hours. The goal is to achieve the six hours before your card expires. Approved classes will require each participant to fill out a Kentucky Master Logger Sign-In sheet at the beginning of the program. These sheets will be sent to the KML office where your CEC’s will be recorded. The Master Logger Office will notify each active KML member at the beginning of the year about upcoming programs. Normally 12 to 15 programs will be scheduled each year at locations throughout the state. If you do not receive notification please contact the KML office.

These include out-of-state logger programs and/or programs conducted by industry or county extension offices that did not officially go through the approval procedure. To obtain credit for attending these types of programs you can click and fill out the following: Continuing Education Credit Form (KML-1) Submit to the KML office. In order to qualify for credit the non-approved program must fall within one of these topic areas: forest management, forest health, timber harvesting, advanced BMPs, timber harvesting and water quality laws and regulations, siliviculture, ecosystem management, logging safety. In addition, the instructors must be qualified to teach the material presented.

You can obtain up to two credits of the required six in this category. In some cases a newsletter that will be sent out by mail or made available on this site will contain an article and related test that you can complete and submit to receive one credit. Simply read the article and complete the test and send it to the KML office. If you correctly answer 80% of the questions you will receive 1 credit per article. Available quizzes are in the Resources/Newsletters section.

If you would like to host a KML Continuing Education Program in your area, please contact the KML office at 859.257.6230 or 1.800.859.6006 and we will be happy to assist you with the necessary forms and submittals.
